How to Specify Prints and Patterns in Fashion Tech Packs

How to specify textile prints and patterns in garment tech packs — repeat types, colorway mapping, placement specifications, and print production methods.

Types of print specifications

Garment prints fall into two main categories: all-over prints (continuous pattern across the entire fabric) and placement prints (specific design at a defined position). Each type requires different tech pack specifications.

All-over prints need repeat specifications and yardage considerations. Placement prints need position, dimension, and alignment specifications. Some garments use both — an all-over print body with a placement print graphic.

All-over print specifications

For all-over printed fabrics, tech packs need:

  • Pattern repeat: dimensions of the repeating unit (width × height)
  • Repeat type: straight, half-drop, brick, mirror, random
  • Scale: size of pattern elements relative to the garment
  • Color count: number of distinct colors in the print
  • Color specifications: exact colors with Pantone references
  • Print method: screen print, digital print, sublimation, discharge
  • Pattern matching requirements: whether pattern must align at seams (stripes, plaids)

Placement print specifications

For placement prints (graphics, logos, text applied to specific positions on the garment):

  • Position: exact placement using garment reference points (e.g., 'center front, 3in below HPS')
  • Dimensions: width × height of the print
  • Orientation: straight, angled, or contoured to garment shape
  • Print method: screen print, DTG, heat transfer, sublimation, puff print
  • Color specifications: each color with Pantone reference and print order
  • Color separation file: provided alongside tech pack for screen printing

Pattern matching at seams

For fabrics with stripes, plaids, or geometric patterns, the tech pack must specify whether pattern matching is required at seams. Pattern matching increases fabric consumption (15-20% more fabric) and production time.

Specify which seams require matching: side seams, shoulder seams, pocket placement, and yoke seams are most common. Not all seams can be matched simultaneously — prioritize the most visible seam lines.

Print in AI tech packs

When designing printed garments with AI, describe the print type, scale, and placement in your garment description. AI tech pack generators include print specifications in the construction notes and BOM — adding print artwork as a separate BOM entry with production method and color count.

For complex prints, provide the artwork file alongside the AI-generated tech pack. The tech pack specifies placement, dimensions, and production method while the artwork file provides the actual design to be printed.
