Global Sizing for AI-Designed Fashion: US, EU, UK, and Asian Markets
How to manage global sizing for AI-designed fashion — US, EU, UK, and Asian size systems, conversion charts, and specifying multi-market sizing in tech packs.
Global sizing systems
Different markets use different sizing systems, and size labels do not map consistently between systems. A US size M is not the same measurement as an EU M or Asian M. Brands selling globally must understand these differences and specify sizing clearly in tech packs.
AI tech pack generators default to a specified market's sizing system. When designing for global distribution, you may need to specify size equivalencies or generate separate graded charts for each market.
Major sizing systems compared
Size systems vary by market and gender.
Women's size equivalencies (approximate)
| US | UK | EU | Japan | China |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| XS (0-2) | 4-6 | 32-34 | 5-7 | 155/80A |
| S (4-6) | 8-10 | 36-38 | 9-11 | 160/84A |
| M (8-10) | 12-14 | 40-42 | 13-15 | 165/88A |
| L (12-14) | 16-18 | 44-46 | 17-19 | 170/92A |
| XL (16-18) | 20-22 | 48-50 | 21-23 | 175/96A |
Market-specific body measurements
Size labels are less important than the actual body measurements they represent. Different markets have different average body measurements for the same size label.
When designing for multiple markets, base your grading on the actual body measurements of your target customer in each market — not on size label equivalencies. A US Medium and a Japanese Medium have very different body measurement assumptions.
Multi-market tech pack specifications
For global distribution, tech packs can handle sizing in several ways:
- Single size chart with multi-market labels: one measurement set, multiple size labels
- Market-specific grading: separate measurement charts optimized for each market
- Core size + regional adaptation: base measurements with regional adjustments
- Body measurement reference: specify target body measurements, let each market choose appropriate size labels
Specifying global sizing in AI tech packs
When generating tech packs for global markets, specify your primary market sizing system and note any secondary markets. The AI generates the primary size chart, and you can request additional size label mappings.
For brands launching in a new market, use AI to generate market-specific graded charts based on that market's body measurement standards. This is faster than manually recalculating grading for each new market.
